Methodology

The project used a participatory approach, with young people taking a leading role in all aspects of the research. In each country 8 Youth Researchers were recruited and trained to work on the project. The Youth Researchers conducted the surveys, narrative interviews, input into story mapping and contributed to data analysis and reporting.

The key stages of the project were as follows.

Stage 1 – inception phase confirmed the selection of research locations, engaged local stakeholders, established an advisory board for the project and obtained ethic approval from the University of Dundee.

Stage 2 – review of relevant academic and policy literature on youth transitions in situations of protracted crises and recruitment and training of Youth Researchers.

Stage 3 – data collection phase that included a baseline survey in each of the research locations, narrative interviews, focus groups (for 10 – 14 year old participants) and story mapping activities.

Stage 4 – analysis that included thematic coding of data and comparison of results across research locations, age, gender and nationality of participants. Initial results were discussed with Youth Researchers who contributed to interpretation of the results.

Stage 5 – workshops were held in each country to discuss the emerging results prior to the report being finalised with DFID.

Further details on the methodology used can be found in the project inception report  and the methodology report below.
